Ervin Peak and Mount Blaurock – 13,538′ and 13,626′

If you like steep bushwhacks in new-growth aspen trees, this one’s for you! The hike up to Ervin was just that for a good thousand feet, with some pines and rock fields thrown in for fun. Beyond that there was a steep tundra walk, and finally some rotten rock to scramble over to reach the sub-summit. From here the ridge is a very nice class 3 scramble to the true peak (see image 6). The scramble is reminiscent of the El Diente / Wilson traverse, with the rock being comparably dubious, but it is great fun with very rewarding route finding. The traverse from Blaurock’s sub-summit to the true summit is less fun, and is mainly boulder hopping. The descent down Blaurock’s ridge and the upper part of the SW slopes is on truly rotten rock and makes for a tedious downclimb. Once this abates the rest of the route is a rather nice hike out, with only simple bush-whackery. Worth the trip for the scramble, but not one I’ll be repeating.
